Luke sinks his teeth into rugby
Refereeing or root canal: When referee Luke Prangly isn't officiating at North
Harbour Rugby World Cup games he can be found at his Hibiscus Coast
Dental practice, where he checks dental partner Tom Lu's teeth for the photo.
By KERRY GALLAGHER
Luke Prangley is used to getting
close to the action, whether pursu-
ing his profession or his passion.
The Red Beach dentist is a
match official at Rugby World
Cup games, acting as a liaison
between a team's management
and the referee.
It means he notifies the referee
of substitutions, manages sin bins
and blood bins, and is in line to
take over as an assistant referee if
Prangley is ranked number two
as a referee in North Harbour and
controls premier club rugby
games. He was in charge for
Silverdale's semifinal win over
Massey this season, for instance.
He has also run the line at ITM
Cup games at North Harbour
But he hopes to make it up the
refereeing order -- eventually to
the point where he can referee
ITM Cup, then Super 15 and
eventually test matches.
At just 28, time is on his side.
And the Rugby World Cup is
giving him valuable experience.
So far, he has managed Japan in
that team's match against France,
the Italian team for their match
against Australia and the
Namibian team in their game
against South Africa.
He will also manage the South
Africans when they play Samoa
today at North Harbour Stadium
For those matches, Prangley
gets a police escort to games, offic-
ial IRB gear and has photo
opportunities with some of the big
He loves it. But he
acknowledges being a referee may
not be for everyone.
You have to have a thick skin,
but a lot of it you don't hear from
the sideline,'' he says.
I discourage my fiancee from
going to the games because it's not
easy to watch someone referee.''
Prangley played some rugby
himself while attending Orewa
College. But it was during his
dental studies at Otago Univer-
sity that he got into refereeing.
It's a great way to be part of the
game at a top level, if you can't
make it as a player,'' he says.
