The large half-page Unitary Plan
myth buster ad inserted by the
Auckland Council (and paid for by the
ratepayer ) in last week s North
Harbour News contained more spin
Its main message, that
misinformation is being spread about
the controversial plan to intensify
large parts of the Auckland region was
also highly ironic, for it has been the
council s own exceedingly poor
communication that has led to
confusion and uncertainty as to what
is being proposed under this plan.
Many people have complained that
navigating the council s website is very
difficult. There have also been
embarrassing errors in fundamental
facts (such as the number of storeys
possible in the mixed housing zone).
There has been no attempt made by
the council to tailor paper copies for
The Auckland Council now has 143
in house communications and
marketing staff (plus many private
contractors from the same field).
The collective cost of these expensive
communicators is said to be in excess
of $30 million a year. Perhaps if their
collective communication skills had
been directed towards open and clear
communication with people in the first
place, then the information vacuum
that has plagued this public feedback
process might have been avoided.
Accurate information is helpful,
ratepayer funded spin is not.
